Digital Media, Blog #4 - Adobe Illustrator Tutorials

Tutorial 1

This first video I checked out is an over three-hour-long course to the Adobe Illustrator program. Although I did not watch the entire video for time, I did find a lot of the information and techniques interesting in how the various tools of the application are used. The tools shown at the beginning of the video include how to use basic squares and rectangles and how to manipulate their fill-colors, size, and corner/curve styles. Using this tool, it also possible to create circles, which are convenient and easy to remember. The beginning of this tutorial also shows how to create smaller arched lines, and then how to manipulate their line thickness, arch degree, and how to curve the ends of the lines to create an arch with no corners. It is also possible to create a triangle with no corners as well.

Tutorial 2

The second tutorial I found first showed how to create various layers, something I didn't notice the first tutorial mention. I'm happy to see that like other Adobe creative cloud software, Illustrator has the ability to work between layers as I often like to use this feature to create unique shapes and designs, like with Photoshop. Afterward, the tutorial then discusses how to create and manipulate other shapes besides quadrilaterals, and then how to affect their line faces to create additional corners and planes, as well as manipulate them to create other curve effects. At the end of the video, it is shown how to manipulate the fill styles of overlapping shapes, and how to have two touching shapes have three different colors between them.

Tutorial 3

This final video I checked out discusses how to use the pen tool in Illustrator. The first thing this video discusses which the other videos did not, was the ability to change the opacity of a layer, as well as name it.  After, the video shows how to link arced lines together with anchor points, and how to manipulate their arc styles, bending in various directions and patterns. This tool can be used to trace around an image over top of a layer with a low opacity to copy its shape. Additionally, more anchor-points can be used to further manipulate lines to smaller details, able to create a shape exactly to the specifications that are needed.
